Young Americans for Liberty

Facebook places a fact check label on a Young Americans for Liberty post: Young Americans for Liberty (YAL) posted an image of an official Texas memorial plaque titled "2nd Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America." The text on the plaque first lists the full text of the Second Amendment, then moves on to a quote that is labeled as being from George Washington. The quote reads "A free people ought not only be armed and disciplined, but they should have sufficient arms and ammunition to maintain a status of independence from any who might attempt to abuse them, which would include their own government." YAL added its own commentary to the post, saying "The Second Amendment was and never will be about be [sic] 'hunting.'" Facebook's label under the post reads "See information from third-party fact-checkers." After clicking the "See why" link, users are informed that the post contains "Partly false information." Four different fact check articles are referenced for this note. All note that while the actual plaque does read as shown in the image, the Washington quote is inaccurate. Only the first ten words reflect a direct quote from one of his speeches, according to the fact check articles. Facebook further restricts this post by showing a notice of the fact check whenever a user tries to "Share" the post. This notice must be clicked through in order to share the post.
