In an era when free speech faces unprecedented threats at home and abroad, the urgent need to dismantle the government censorship cartel has become a rallying cry for those who value open discourse and unfiltered truth.
MRC Free Speech America’s latest report makes plain that the Biden administration used the governmental levers of power at its disposal to continuously attack American freedoms and undermine the Constitution. It waged war on free speech with no fewer than 57 censorship initiatives.
From the report: “The Biden administration’s censorship efforts ran the gamut from coercing and colluding with Big Tech platforms to silence his opponents; using taxpayer dollars to fund censorship organizations that pledged to cancel conservative voices; enlisting foreign agents to suppress stories from right-leaning media outlets; and weaponizing federal agencies to target those critical of the administration.
“This report details 57 distinct Biden initiatives that targeted Americans’ ability to speak their minds. The degree and extent of this coordination is dizzying, spanning no fewer than 90 different government agencies, entangling hundreds of government officials and including thousands of individual censorship actions. The number of people silenced, or prevented from receiving messages they wanted to hear, is all but incalculable. The harm to the nation’s constitutional framework and the system of limited government is similarly beyond measure.”
Laid out like a Reader’s Digest version of government aggression against American principles, the report details 57 easily-digestible initiatives perpetrated by the Biden administration with 13 subset stories linked throughout.
Among some of the worst examples were the Biden administration’s relentless attacks on his political opponents from former liberal Democrats Tulsi Gabbard and Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. to eccentric billionaire and free speech advocate Elon Musk and, of course, President Donald Trump. But those were just the tip of what can now be seen as a very large iceberg. The Biden administration has also gone after speech by attacking blockchain (including crypto), patriotic soldiers and law enforcement agents, and even the American people more broadly.
But what can be done? Here are four recommendations MRC has given for righting the ship:
-
Remove Censors from Government: Government officials behind Biden’s censorship initiatives, such as current National Science Foundation Director Sethuraman Panchanathan among others listed in Initiative #57, should be removed from their posts and replaced with pro-American free speech advocates.
-
Defund Censorship Groups: Censorship outfits like those named in this report, such as Ad Fontes, Meedan and The Poynter Institute, should be prohibited from receiving future government grants.
-
Provide Justice for Victims of Censorship: Congress should enact legislation, such as Rep. Harriet Hageman’s “Standing to Challenge Government Censorship Act,” that creates new private rights of action for victims of government censorship to seek justice.
-
Follow the Constitution: Congress should reassert its constitutional authority and rescind its vast, unconstitutional delegation of power to independent agencies like the National Labor Relations Board and Securities & Exchange Commission.
MRC Free Speech America has provided the receipts with its research. But as Fox News columnist David Marcus warned in his piece on the MRC report, the Trumpian pro-free speech reforms — good as they may be — won’t much matter if in four years a Democrat takes back the White House and turns the censorship dial right back up, “this time quite possibly set to 11.” So D.O.G.E, the Trump administration, members of Congress and freedom-loving Americans throughout this great nation must act now with lasting reforms that will lead to the restoration of our founding principles.
