Twitter censors conservative columnist Quin Hillyer for quoting Saturday Night Live: Apparently what is appropriate for television is not appropriate for Twitter. Washington Examiner columnist Quin Hillyer reported that he was required to delete a tweet that he made in response to a request to "Tell me you watched SNL in the 1970s without saying you watched SNL in the 1970s." The user who made the request had a first name of "Jon," so Hillyer pulled out a classic Dan Akroyd line, repeated often not just on the then-popular comedy sketch show, but also ever since as a cultural reference: "Jon, you ignorant slut." Akroyd actually used the name "Jane," as it was always addressed to his skit partner Jane Curtin. After reportedly receiving a censorship notice from Twitter claiming that the tweet violated it's rules against "hateful conduct," Hillyer appealed the decision, explaining that the tweet was not a slur aimed at anyone, but a reference to a much-quoted SNL skit. Twitter still did not see the humor in it, and denied the appeal, according to Hillyer. He pointed out in his Examiner column about the incident that Twitter allows abundant use of blatant profanity, but denied the use of a culturally iconic comedic quote. This is a sad commentary on the state of humor today. Hillyer indicated that he was required to delete the tweet in order to regain access to his account. He was tweeting again as of the publishing of this case.
