X Community Notes targets critique of anti-gun laws in Germany: On Dec. 21, podcaster Ian Miles Cheong posted a video clip of a person learning self-defense using a towel and commented, “In Germany, you’re not allowed to use a weapon to defend yourself so they have self-defense classes where they teach people how to use towels. This is a disarmed society.” On Dec. 26, X Community Notes had imposed a fact-check label asserting, “Several pieces of incorrect information: 1. The video does not show a generally applicable course for everyone. It is specifically tailored to hospital staff only: https://www-tagesschau-de.translate.goog/multimedia/video/video-1387466.html?_x_tr_sl=de&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=de&_x_tr_pto=wapp 2. Self-defense is also permitted with weapons in Germany: https://www-bussgeldkatalog-net.translate.goog/selbstverteidigungswaffen/?_x_tr_sl=de&_x_tr_tl=en&_x_tr_hl=de&_x_tr_pto=wapp”. Despite mentioning “several” pieces of allegedly incorrect information, the fact-check only included two points. The link provided in the note which supposedly undermined Cheong’s point detailed that no potentially lethal weapons, such as guns or knives, are allowed for self-defense in Germany.
