Fr. Marc Lyden-Smith

X community adds a context note to user's D-Day post: Father Marc Lyden-Smith posted on X to honor the anniversary of D-Day. He wrote "On #DDay, 90% of the soldiers on the first boats didn't live to see the end of the day. Look at those faces. Some of them never made it to 18. Some never fell in love, or had the opportunity to have children. They never voted, or owned a home, they never saw parents again. Think about that. They paid the ultimate price for our freedom. We will remember them. #lestweforget2024." He included a photo of young men in uniform on a landing boat. The X community added a note to the post that read: "Readers added context they thought people might want to know. Whilst well-intentioned this is misleading. The photo is from 1942, Operation Torch in North Africa: iwm.org.uk/collections/it… 90% casualties (dead, wounded, missing) were exceptional, reported in one unit at Omaha beach: bbc.co.uk/news/uk-482156…. This unit was A Co, 166th: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/116th_Inf…. On D-Day 4,414 died, from 156,000 soldiers: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Normandy_…" The label is part of X’s Community Notes system. X users are able to sign up as contributors to add context to posts. X owner Elon Musk shared that any post with a Community Note added to it will be demonetized. The Community Notes account on X also posted that notices will be pushed to users who previously engaged with a post when a Community Note is added to it later.
