American Principles Project

Twitter places sensitive content interstitial over APP ad: American Principles Project, an organization that advocates for the rights and interests of sustaining the nuclear family, posted a video of one of the targeted ads it is running in Michigan. The ad showed blurred-out pornographic images from the graphic novel "Gender Queer" and reads out parts of the book. It drew attention to the books allowed in public libraries in Michigan. APP explained in a tweet why it posted the disturbing ads. "We are running this ad (and others like it) in Michigan, Maine, Illinois, and Wisconsin starting this week — all as part of a $10 million+ spend to hold Democrats accountable for grooming our kids." Twitter placed a sensitive content interstitial over the ad, covering it and preventing mobile users from seeing it without changing their Twitter settings. "The following media includes potentially sensitive content," the interstitial notice reads. MRC Free Speech America found a dozen tweets over the last 2 months that show the same images without the sensitive content filter. Director of Policy for APP Jon Schweppe spoke on the censorship. "[Y]ou know maybe there’s an argument for sensitive content, but we also know Twitter has been caught red-handed repeatedly with child pornography on their platform," he told MRC Free Speech America. "So this is a platform that is obviously one-sided and hypocritical when they apply their own policies."  The Verge reported that employees of Twitter voiced concerns that "'the pace of [child sexual exploitation] content creation and distribution" has accelerated "to a breaking point where manual detection, review, and investigations no longer scale'"APP is a member of the Free Speech Alliance.
