X community adds a context note to ACLU tweet: The American Civil Liberties Union's (ACLU) X (formerly Twitter) account tweeted, “The state of Florida never provided medically necessary gender-affirming care to Duane Owen — causing her [sic] enormous suffering and violating her [sic] right to be free from cruel and unusual punishment for the more than 30 years she [sic] was in state custody.” The tweet included a meme that read "The state of Florida has executed Duane Owen." Twitter added a label to the post that read "Readers added context they thought people might want to know.” The added context read "In 1984 Owen murdered and raped both a 14 year old girl and a 38 year old mother. Owen's lawyers argued insanity. Psychiatrists for the state testified Owen faked schizophrenia and had no signs of gender dysphoria. His records indicate he exhibits sexual sadism. cbsnews.com/news/florida-e…" The label is part of Twitter’s Community Notes system. Twitter users are able to sign up as contributors to add context to tweets.
