Once again, leftists in the media are wondering how the country will go on if deportations of illegal immigrants take place and they lose what they see as their imported servant class.
CNN Business Reporter Matt Egan incredibly warned viewers that if President-elect Donald Trump successfully deports illegal aliens, someone else will have to labor in the fields. During the Nov. 18 edition of Inside Politics with Dana Bash, Egan claimed that 41% of farm workers are “unauthorized” and 1.7 million people in the “food supply chain” are “undocumented.” Rather than show any concern for unemployed Americans, let alone the out-of-control humanitarian crisis, Egan chose to focus on whether deporting them would cause higher food prices. “One farmer in Michigan told me that mass deportations would be, quote, devastating to the AG economy because there just would not be enough people to pick the crops,” Egan said.
In response to these jaw-dropping, racist comments, NewsBusters Managing Editor Curtis Houck blasted Egan in a post on X. Houck wrote, “CNN's business correspondent Matt Egan literally does a 'but who will pick the cotton' segment on 'Inside Politics' lamenting the deportation of illegal immigrants, arguing it'll decimate the American economy. He literally sounds like the Confederates did re: slavery.” This is just as bad as when TV personality Kelly Osbourne committed a Freudian slip in 2015 on The View when she tried attacking Trump’s hardline immigration policy: “If you kick every Latino out of this country, then who is going to be cleaning your toilet, Donald Trump?” Talk about cringe.
During the interview, Egan claimed that “Food would get more expensive, possibly a lot more expensive. And that would directly undercut another Trump campaign proposal, promise rather, which is to get inflation under control.” He continued: “Now, the big economic problem here is that we're talking about industries that are heavily reliant on foreign workers. Many of them are undocumented. And so when you have fewer workers, it means less food. And yes higher prices.”
In this segment, Egan ignored the serious damage done to American workers by illegal immigration. In 2016 Harvard Professor Howard J. Borjas found that high school dropouts are being hammered by low-skill immigration, citing Census data showing “the earnings of this particularly vulnerable group dropped by between $800 and $1,500 each year.”
When CNN host Dana Bash moved on from deportations to ask about current inflation, Egan pivoted quickly back to routine pro-Biden-Harris propaganda. Egan told Bash that there has been “a surprising amount of progress.” He added, “Just about two years ago, we saw that supermarket inflation was skyrocketing, we're talking about 13%. That was just a nightmare for the American people. But we've seen the rate of inflation come down sharply.” During the first 44 months since President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris took office, prices rose 19.9%.
Even Egan had to awkwardly admit that this “progress” did little to solve the problems of ordinary Americans: “But the level of prices, which I know is what our viewers pay most attention to that is still very high.” Uh, duh!
