X community adds a context note to PETA's post: People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) posted "We’re hoping his passing reminds @UniversityOfGA just how irresponsible it is for them to be promoting unhealthy, breathing-impaired, flat-faced breeds like English Bulldogs." The post included a meme with a depiction of the University of Georgia's bulldog mascot, Uga, with text reading "RIP Uga, He struggled to breathe every day of his entire life. Uga, University of Georgia's retired mascot died this morning. The University of Georgia promotes chronically suffering, breathing-impaired breeds AND the cruel dog-breeding industry by using an English Bulldog, as its symbol. The school has subjected ELEVEN dogs to the stress & danger of being used as its mascot. It must stop dooming dogs to live like this." The X community added a note to the post that read: "Readers added context they thought people might want to know. As the mascot for an athletically and financially successful state university, UGA is both loved well cared for. youtu.be/3HpIC6Vyoy8?si…" The label is part of X’s Community Notes system. X users are able to sign up as contributors to add context to posts. X owner Elon Musk shared that any post with a Community Note added to it will be demonetized. The Community Notes account on X also posted that notices will be pushed to users who previously engaged with a post when a Community Note is added to it later.
