Orrin Heatlie

Facebook bans organizer of Gavin Newsom recall effort: Facebook deleted the account of Orrin Heatlie, the primary organizer of a campaign to recall California Governor Gavin Newsom. A Facebook spokesperson confirmed to the San Francisco Chronicle that Heatlie’s profile had been removed in September 2020. While the platform would not elaborate on why Heatlie's profile had been removed, it did say the ban was unrelated to the Newsom recall effort. Facebook pointed to its company policy that indicates it removes “pages and groups for a variety of reasons including hate speech (and) incitement to violence,” according to The Chronicle, as well as to its policy that states group administrators whose pages pose “a risk to public safety.” Heatlie, a former sheriff’s sergeant, recognized that he had been a part of two groups he found questionable, including one where he was briefly named an honorary administrator. “It wasn’t a group I had interaction with other than to promote the recall,” Heatlie told The Chronicle. “Their inflammatory agenda and rhetoric was counterproductive to our mission objective. We promote a peaceful and lawful recall process, the power of the people to petition their government, a fundamental right.”
