Facebook claims post about study showing masking is ineffective is “missing context”: MRC Business’s Joseph Vazquez on Feb. 21 posted the New York Times opinion piece, “The Mask Mandates Did Nothing. Will Any Lessons Be Learned?” Facebook placed a fact-check label on Vazquez’s post, claiming the NYT piece was “missing context” because Facebook objects to a study it cited. “Independent fact-checkers say this information is missing context and could mislead people,” the Facebook notice said. The fact-checker was Science Feedback. This fact-check cited by Facebook claimed that the “Cochrane review” had “limitations” that make it unreliable. Yet even the enthusiastically pro-mask CDC found the difference in COVID-19 cases between masking and not masking was negligible—less than one percent.
