Facebook plugin censors comment on local news site that uses the platform's software: A user reported that her comment on the website of her local newspaper, the Batavian, was censored by Facebook because the site uses Facebook's commenting plugin. The paper reported on a letter sent from the Batavia NY City Council to the New York State legislature in order to alert lawmakers of the unfavorable effects of proposed bail reforms. In her comments, the user applauded the city council member who spearheaded the letter. She also claimed that a poorly reported news story covered by The Marshal Project used a Batavia shoplifter as an example of why bail reform is needed. When the editor of the local paper's wife asked for the link the user provided it in a separate comment.  Facebook's commenting plugin deleted both of her comments claiming it went "against Community Standards on spam." When the user appealed to Facebook, the platform claimed it did not have enough "reviewers available right now because of the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak." According to the user, the editor of The Batavian "agreed that there was nothing about [the comments] that would warrant censorship...." and [h]e indicated he was not aware that the Plug-In gave Facebook the ability to censor comments on his site."
