OpenAI denies its nonprofit discount to Holy Sexuality because it is a religious nonprofit: Christian-based nonprofit Holy Sexuality sought to obtain a corporate subscription to ChatGPT, owned by OpenAI, for use in its operations. OpenAI advertised a 20% discount for nonprofit organizations. However, when Holy Sexuality, a registered 501(c)3 organization, applied for this discount, OpenAI claimed that according to its partnership with Goodstack to verify nonprofit eligibility, the organization did not qualify for the discount because "religious ... institutions are not eligible." The ministry has filed a lawsuit against the software company alleging violation of California's Unruh Civil Rights Act. The organization won a settlement in a very similar case against software provider Asana which also refused to extend its nonprofit discount because of the religious nature of the charity.
