Facebook fact-checks post correlating genocidal dictators and gun control policies: Freedom In America posted a graphic detailing that Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, Mao Zedong and Pol Pot all confiscated guns before killing millions of people. Facebook flagged the post as false and linked to a Politifact article which critiques a very different graphic with a similar point. Politifact does not dispute the that these dictators confiscated guns nor the accuracy of the numbers cited in the graphic. Instead, Politifact disputed the inferred correlation between genocide and gun control because gun ownership could not have completely prevented these examples of genocide. When posts are fact-checked they are automatically suppressed via Facebook's algorithm. Per Facebook's policy, "Once a fact-checker rates a piece of content as False, Altered or Partly False, it will appear lower in News Feed...This significantly reduces the number of people who see it."
