Facebook disingenuously fact-checks meme about high gas prices being Biden's fault, claims it "has no basis in fact": A meme posted to Facebook depicted two gas station price boards. The top one showed regular gas costing $4.27, while the bottom one showed it at $1.74. Text overlaid the top photo saying "Don't blame me when you voted for this." Text overlay over the bottom image said "Cause I voted for this." Facebook placed a fact-check interstitial over the top of the image, claiming that it is "False Information." The fact-check linked to a USA Today article titled: "Rising gas prices due to high demand and low supply, not Biden's policies." However, this fact-check got many things wrong, as detailed at The Federalist. The outlet found the fact-check so bad that it called it a "fake fact-check," and noted the disclaimer at the bottom of it that stated the fact-check work was "supported in part by a grant from Facebook, who referred to USA Today on the interstitial itself as an "independent fact-checker." According to Facebook, users fail to click through fact-check interstitials 95% of the time.
