Donald J. Trump

Live Streaming service Twitch indefinitely suspends Trump's account: Twitch is a live streaming platform best-known for its use amongst gamers who stream themselves while playing their video games. At a certain point during his presidency, the Trump administration found it worthwhile to begin reaching out to Americans via Twitch and decided to create an account for the president. Twitch has levied restrictions against the president's account in the past, including what the company described as "disabling" his account on Jan. 7. At that time, Twitch said: “In light of yesterday’s shocking attack on the Capitol, we have disabled President Trump’s Twitch channel,” a Twitch spokesperson said in a statement, according to The Verge. “Given the current extraordinary circumstances and the President’s incendiary rhetoric, we believe this is a necessary step to protect our community and prevent Twitch from being used to incite further violence.” The company said it would reassess Trump’s account after he leaves office. On Jan. 20, Twitch did reassess the situation as they promised, and have now indicated that Trump's account has been "indefinitely suspended." The company's statement indicates that they believe that Trump's statements continue to be interpreted by some as calls to violence, so action must be taken against him. The statement continued, saying that while hate speech and violent rhetoric is already banned on the platform, "the events of the past weeks have highlighted a gap with respect to rhetoric that encourages violence, regardless of whether or not it was directly streamed on Twitch. We will be updating our policies as a result of our consideration of this situation." The status of Trump's account now prevents any appeals, so the suspension will continue unabated until Twitch changes its stance.
