Almost a dozen countries have signed on to an Orwellian declaration aimed at quashing free debate on climate.
The United Nations Global Initiative for Information Integrity on Climate Change proudly announced Wednesday that multiple nations agreed to target “climate disinformation.” One UN executive specifically mentioned Big Tech, and the press release insisted on a whole-of-society approach, including aid from private businesses. And the head of the UN argued that “information integrity” includes controlling information online.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres lectured before the COP30 conference in Brazil, where the countries signed the declaration, “We must fight mis- and disinformation, online harassment, and greenwashing.”
In a similar vein, UNESCO’s Director-General Audrey Azoulay exposed this declaration as perhaps nothing but a censorship initiative. She claimed, “Through this initiative, we will support the journalists and researchers investigating climate issues, sometimes at great risk to themselves, and fight the climate-related disinformation running rampant on social media.”
While the First Amendment explicitly prohibits government-led censorship, the United Nations initiative may still impact Americans, as foreign governments may pressure American social media companies to censor certain content. In fact, the European Union and the Turkish governments have already done exactly that.
The countries that newly endorsed the declaration at COP30 are Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Chile, Denmark, Spain, Finland, Sweden and Uruguay. But the scope of the Initiative’s Global Fund for Information Integrity on Climate Change is much broader than that. This entity has already received 447 proposals from almost 100 countries since its June launch, per the release. This truly is a concerted global effort against free speech.
The UN listed the commitments of its declaration:
- Promote the integrity of information related to climate change in line with international human rights law, including freedom of expression standards
- Support the sustainability of a diverse and resilient media ecosystem to ensure accurate and reliable coverage on climate and environmental issues
- Support the inclusion of information integrity commitments into the Action for Climate Empowerment agenda under the UNFCCC
- Promote informed and inclusive climate action by advancing equitable access to accurate, evidence-based, understandable information for all
- Foster cooperation and capacity-building to address threats to information integrity, safeguarding those reporting on and researching climate issues
That is a lot of jargon to say that the UN and its partner governments are looking to censor any opinions or facts about climate with which they disagree.
