Elon Musk’s X accuses the European Union of impacting free speech worldwide through its aggressive censorship demands.

The U.S. House Judiciary Committee and European Union (EU) officials are currently battling over EU censorship overreach, and X Global Government Affairs jumped into the conflict on Wednesday. The X platform sided with committee chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) and bashed the “de facto global censorship” of EU legislation like the Digital Services Act (DSA).

X Global Government Affairs posted Wednesday, “In her response to Chairman Jim Jordan, EU's VP Henna Virkkunen maintains that the Digital Services Act applies only within the EU and safeguards free speech. However, the House Judiciary Committee's report reveals how it leads to de facto global censorship through massive fines and threats of shutdowns. We should always defend our liberties against foreign overreach.”

The X account also linked to the official Judiciary Committee report exposing dangerous crackdowns on free speech and the consequences for the U.S. This July report accused the EU of using the DSA “as a censorship tool” against content that is “neither harmful nor illegal” and “to pressure platforms, primarily American social media companies, to change their global content moderation policies.” This impacts content even in the United States, hence X’s protest against the DSA. The EU continues to investigate and pressure X over alleged DSA violations.

On August 5, after a trip to Europe to meet with EU lawmakers, Jordan expressed continuing concern, stating that “sweeping regulations” do in fact “create a serious chilling effect on free expression and threaten the First Amendment rights of American citizens and companies.” The committee will also now monitor companies’ status in fighting European governments over censorship demands.
