The White House celebrated President Donald Trump's first anniversary in office by touting his successful efforts to protect Americans’ free speech.

In a press release listing “promises kept,” the White House celebrated the progress Trump has already made in the first year as part of his effort to defend Americans' constitutional rights.

Indeed, one of Trump’s major campaign promises ahead of his Nov. 5, 2024, election was to reverse four years of the Biden administration’s harsh censorship regime in coordination with Big Tech. The “Promises Made, Promises Kept” press release linked to Trump’s January 2023 promise “to bust up the censorship regime and bring back free speech again.” The release then explained:

“President Trump signed executive orders dismantling censorship, protecting religious freedoms, and safeguarding Second Amendment rights, and has directed his administration to take all necessary steps to defend Americans’ constitutional rights from overreach.”

One of the major changes from the Biden administration to the Trump administration was the end of government-social media censorship collusion. The previous administration coordinated harsh censorship of Americans for COVID-19- and election-related content, among other topics, as exposed by the Twitter Files and the Murthy v. Missouri lawsuit.

In January, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg admitted to censoring election and COVID-19 content unfairly after pressure from the Biden administration and announced changes to his company’s fact-checking system and censorship policies.

The Trump administration’s pro-free speech actions include a day-one executive order ending government coordination of online censorship, imposing tariffs on Brazil for its government censorship campaign and a tentative offer to Europeans targeted for free speech to seek asylum in America.

In August, Trump warned European governments not to punish American Big Tech companies, as “I will stand up to Countries that attack our incredible American Tech Companies.” Furthermore, Trump’s Department of Justice also won a suit against Google, alleging the tech giant has an illegal monopoly in both the “publisher ad server” and “ad exchange” markets.
