The Trump White House signaled it may consider granting asylum to Europeans targeted for their free speech.

At a White House press briefing on April 28, former Mumford & Sons musician and podcast host Winston Marshall asked whether his fellow British citizens could apply for political asylum in the U.S. if threatened with jail over free speech. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt praised Marshall for raising the issue and promised to pass it on to President Donald Trump.

Marshall explained, “In Britain, we have had a quarter of a million people issued non-crime hate incidents. As we speak, there are people in prison for quite literally posting memes. We have extensive prison sentences for tweets, social media posts and general free speech issues. Would the Trump administration consider political asylum for British citizens in such a situation?”

Leavitt approvingly replied to his question, “It's a very good one. I have not heard that proposed to the president nor have I spoken to him about that idea, but I certainly can and talk to our national security team and see if it's something the administration would entertain.”

During a subsequent interview on Newsmax to discuss the exchange, Marshall stated that the UK is currently considering anti-free speech “Islamophobia laws,” which “means you won’t be allowed to criticize the religion of Islam,” though criticism of Judaism and Christianity will still be allowed.

When Vice President JD Vance traveled to the Munich Security Conference in February, he bashed Europe’s censorship crackdowns.

“Now to many of us on the other side of the Atlantic,” Vance stated, “it looks more and more like old entrenched interests hiding behind ugly Soviet-era words like misinformation and disinformation, who simply don't like the idea that somebody with an alternative viewpoint might express a different opinion or God forbid vote a different way or even worse win an election.”
