President Donald Trump issued a stern warning to other governments against undermining American tech companies’ ability to platform free speech and protect U.S. customers and sovereignty.
Late on Monday, Trump posted his hard-hitting caution on Truth Social against foreign legislation “designed to harm, or discriminate against, American Technology.” He clarified that he will be using tariffs to punish nations with governments that ignore his warning.
Trump declared, “As the President of the United States, I will stand up to Countries that attack our incredible American Tech Companies. Digital Taxes, Digital Services Legislation, and Digital Markets Regulations are all designed to harm, or discriminate against, American Technology.”
The European Union’s Digital Services Act and the United Kingdom’s Online Safety Act are among the laws being weaponized to pressure X, Facebook, and other U.S. companies to enact censorship and consumer privacy violations.
Trump further asserted that there is clear discrimination not only against American companies but in favor of companies from Communist China. “They also, outrageously, give a complete pass to China's largest Tech Companies. This must end, and end NOW!” he insisted.
Trump then made clear the penalty foreign nations would face if they continue pressuring American tech companies with fines if they fail to censor online speech. The president stated, “With this TRUTH, I put all Countries with Digital Taxes, Legislation, Rules, or Regulations, on notice that unless these discriminatory actions are removed, I, as President of the United States, will impose substantial additional Tariffs on that Country's Exports to the U.S.A., and institute Export restrictions on our Highly Protected Technology and Chips.”
He emphasized that America and her tech companies are not any longer “the ‘piggy bank’ nor the ‘doormat’ of the World,” and warned foreign governments: “Show respect to America and our amazing Tech Companies or, consider the consequences!”
The Trump administration has consistently prioritized free speech both at home and abroad. In fact, the president imposed higher tariffs on Brazil in July in response to Brazil’s repeated censorship actions aimed at American tech companies.
At the Paris AI summit, Vice President JD Vance also called out Europe for trying to use American tech companies to push censorship on its own citizens. The Trump administration is troubled by reports that some foreign governments are considering tightening the screws on US tech companies with international footprints,” he said. “America cannot and will not accept that and we think it's a terrible mistake not just for the United States of America but for your own countries.”
