CNN apparently can’t get its talking points in order after wantonly lecturing people to “chill” with the recession talk back in February.
CNN’s May 2 headline didn't mince words about the current precarious state of America’s economy. “Why a US recession is probably coming,” the headline read. That’s the exact opposite of what the same outlet pushed nearly three months prior. “It’s time to chill with all the recession talk,” read the competing Feb. 6 CNN headline. Make up your mind, CNN.
In February, CNN broke out the proverbial champagne to celebrate President Joe Biden’s inflation-rattled economy: “[I]n the (slightly) brighter light of 2023, it looks as if the optimists — those who called inflation 'transitory' and believed the Fed could pull off a so-called soft landing — were right all along.” CNN was adamant that the “The labor market is just not giving up. And that makes it hard, if not impossible, to imagine a recession anytime soon.” That perspective only had a shelf life of about three months.
Now, the propaganda outlet is singing a completely different tune: “[BNY Mellon Investment Management Senior Investment Strategist Jake Jolly told CNN: ‘A recession sooner or later remains more likely than not.’” Citing Jolly, CNN is now promoting recession undergirded by a serious “credit crunch” as the most probable outcome with a 50 percent probability. Still, the outlet tried to cushion the blow of the bad news by spinning that a recession “certainly isn’t the best-case scenario.”
MRC Business Vice President Dan Schneider called out CNN for its 180-degree turnaround: "The narrative is changing on the state of our economy and our Republic." In Schneider's view, "The legacy media has previously been doing everything they could to protect Joe Biden for his reelection efforts. But recently, you see signs that the media is offering the backdoor to let Biden escape in place of a Democratic candidate in a stronger position to win another term as president."
The Hill pointed out April 20 that a "[r]ecession [was] already here for many Americans as buying power, credit, social net shrinks."
But Americans shouldn’t expect CNN to be honest about the country’s struggling economy anyway. After all, CNN is the same outlet that once tried implying that recession proclamations were racist.
