Zwarte Piet

Facebook Oversight Board upholds decision to delete Dutch clip of cultural figure 'Zwarte Piet': Facebook's oversight board ruled to uphold the platform's decision to delete a 17-second clip that included the Dutch cultural figure known as "Zwarte Piet," also referred to as "Black Pete." A user from the Netherlands posted the clip which included two individuals dressed up as Zwarte Piet who "had their faces painted black and wore Afro wigs under hats and colorful renaissance-style clothes," according to the oversight board. The oversight board said the platform's decision was in line with its Hate Speech Community Standards which explicitly prohibit content with individuals donning "blackface." According to the boards decison there was sufficient evidence that "the content included caricatures that are inextricably linked to negative and racist stereotypes, and are considered by parts of Dutch society to sustain systemic racism in the Netherlands." The oversight board added that Facebook policy states content with "blackface" is only allowed for purposes of education and raising awareness about its racial insensitivities.
