TheTexasOne
Case #
5607

Twitter community censors TheTexasOne: TheTexasOne tweeted, “Tyre Nichols worked at FedEx. One of the officers ex/child’s mother worked there. Tyre had sex with her and took a picture, and then sent it to the officer. This was personal. Always do your own research.” However, Twitter labelled the tweet with a warning, which is part of Twitter’s Community Notes system. The header of the label says, “Readers added context they thought people might want to know.” The warning continues, “This is an unsubstantiated claim” and includes a link to a Politifact article. The article says, “PolitiFact found no evidence that Nichols was involved with the wife or girlfriend — or ex-wife or ex-girlfriend — of any of the officers charged in his death. Nichols’ family said the claims are untrue.” The article concludes, “Investigators have not released a clear motive for the officers’ actions and the officers’ attorneys also have not commented. PolitiFact found no evidence to substantiate the claims that Nichols was involved with one of the officers’ wives, girlfriends or exes. Nichols’ stepfather said the claims were untrue. We rate this unsubstantiated claim False.” However, the PolitiFact article never actually cited evidence disproving the claim. Instead, the article uses inconclusive statements to assert that TheTexasOne’s claim—that the police officers had a personal vendetta against Nichols—is false.
