Instagram fact-checks post with video of World Economic Forum (WEF) contributor’s controversial comments: The account riseup_canada posted a video clip on Oct. 2 of a WEF contributor, Prof. Mariana Mazzucato, mourning that global powers had not succeeded in vaccinating everyone during the Covid-19 pandemic. She then appeared to indicate that control of the water supply could be used by authorities as incentive for compliance at a future time. “Every kid knows how important it is to have water,” she said. “When you’re playing football and you’re thirsty, you need water. So, there’s also something about really getting citizen engagement around this and really, in some ways, experimenting with this notion of the common good.” She added, “Can we actually deliver this time in ways we have failed miserably other times? And hopefully we won’t keep failing on the other things, but anyway…” Instagram imposed a filter on the video clip that required users to click through it to view the video. The filter included the claim of “False information”, citing “independent fact-checkers.” Clicking “See why” brings up a link to an Australian Associated Press article, “Putting vaccines in water supply is a load of dribble.” Neither the video clip nor riseup_canada’s comment, “Looks like their next project will be water,” directly claimed the WEF contributor was suggesting putting vaccines in the water supply. Instagram seemingly did not address the interpretation that Mazzucato was suggesting the use of water as an incentive for vaccination, etc.
