Twitter locks President Trump out of his account rendering him unable to tweet for 12-hours, or longer if he refuses to delete tweets: Civil unrest on Capitol Hill led Twitter to rapidly update its civic integrity policy, which has been used heavy-handedly before, during and after the 2020 election to target information shared by President Donald Trump concerning election fraud. A thread of tweets released by @TwitterSafety about the policy update said the move was aimed at "significantly restricting engagement with Tweets labeled under our Civic Integrity Policy due to the risk of violence." "In regard to the ongoing situation in Washington, D.C., we are working proactively to protect the health of the public conversation occurring on [Twitter] and will take action on any content that violates the Twitter Rules," @TwitterSafety said in its thread about the update. "This means these labeled Tweets will not be able to be replied to, Retweeted, or liked." Shortly after Twitter updated its policy amid the politically charged chaos on Capitol Hill, the platform gave three of Trump's tweets the newly minted label for conveniently violating its brand new policy. These tweets from Trump were considered in violation of Twitter's newly updated civic integrity policy, and were the catalyst for Twitter locking Trump out of his account and suspending his ability to tweet for 12-hours, or more. Twitter said in order for Trump to regain access to his account after the 12-hour suspension he must delete his violating tweets. He ultimately acquiesced. Outrageously, one of Trump's tweets flagged under the new policy contained a short one-minute clip of Trump imploring protesters on Capitol Hill to end the pandemonium. In the clip of Trump speaking from the White House rose garden he said that "we have to have peace," and "law and order," which he added includes respecting law enforcement. "We don't want anybody hurt," Trump reiterated in the video. "I know how you feel, but go home and go home in peace," he concluded the clip. Trump empathized with the angry and disruptive protesters, but the clip was primarily about telling them to go home in peace. Furthermore, Twitter also threatened to permanently suspend Trump's account for "Future violations of the Twitter Rules, including our Civic Integrity or Violent Threats policies," the company said, according to Politico. "Our public interest policy — which has guided our enforcement action in this area for years — ends where we believe the risk of harm is higher and/or more severe."
