X owner Elon Musk is challenging a radical leftist attorney general about the enforcement of a law that would likely make online censorship explode during election cycles.

X filed an April 23 lawsuit against Soros-funded Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison. Ellison is responsible for enforcing a law that criminalizes posting images and videos or “deep fakes” made by artificial intelligence featuring political candidates. The law imposes prison sentences of up to five years for repeat offenders or a fine of up to $10,000 or both. Additionally, a candidate who violates this law may be prohibited from taking office for this speech. Minnesota, like Romania, is placing claims of fighting disinformation above the will of the people.

The lawsuit warned that not only would the law target X directly, but it would push censorship across all social media platforms. “Its requirements are so vague and unintelligible that social media platforms cannot understand what the statute permits and what it prohibits, which will lead to blanket censorship, including of fully protected, core political speech,” the complaint reads.

X went on to argue that platforms would preemptively remove anything that could be considered a “deep fake” to avoid the law’s harsh penalties, guaranteeing mass censorship of viewers during elections.

The law’s sponsor, Sen. Erin Maye Quade (D-MN), responded to the lawsuit by attacking Musk: “Elon Musk funneled hundreds of millions of dollars into the 2024 presidential election and tried to buy a Wisconsin Supreme Court seat. Of course he is upset that Minnesota law prevents him from spreading deepfakes that [sic] meant to harm candidates and influence elections.”

The man responsible for enforcing this law has also likely shown animosity toward Musk and free speech in the past. Ellison wrote, “obrigado Brasil!” — which means “thank you, Brazil,” in Portuguese, the same day that Brazil’s Supreme Court upheld a ban on Musk’s social media platform.
