The Trump-led FBI has placed one of its key agents on leave for his involvement in the government’s collusion with social media companies to censor information. The move signals the bureau’s commitment to restoring public trust after years of the Biden administration’s efforts to undermine the First Amendment.

The disciplined agent, Assistant Special Agent in Charge Elvis Chan, was placed on “terminal leave” and barred from accessing his government devices for over a month, according to sources cited by the Independent Newsroom and Just the News on Thursday.

The suspension seemingly coincided with MRC Free Speech America’s publication of a report detailing 57 censorship initiatives enacted by former President Joe Biden. MRC reported that Chan, a veteran FBI agent, had conditioned social media companies to mistakenly believe the Hunter Biden laptop might have been part of a Russian disinformation campaign leading up to the 2020 election.

Additionally, Chan was identified as a key figure present during closed-door meetings about censorship between the government and Big Tech companies in the months before Americans took to the voting booth to elect their next president in 2020. The House Judiciary Committee sued him after the Biden Department of Justice instructed him to ignore a congressional subpoena

The lawsuit states that Chan attended a meeting on October 14, 2020, where the FBI informed Facebook that they “had no comment” on the New York Post story regarding the Hunter Biden laptop, which had been published that same day. The bureau’s refusal to provide comments was puzzling, given that the FBI had been in possession of the laptop since 2019.

Even worse were Chan’s alleged claims in his deposition for the Missouri v. Biden case, when he claimed that he was unaware of any other communications between the FBI and Facebook concerning the laptop. The lawsuit asserts that internal communications from Facebook indicated that an employee spoke with Chan about the laptop on October 15, 2020.

The House Judiciary Committee noted that Chan identified himself as “one of the primary people with pass-through information” and that he led a team of FBI agents who frequently communicated with social media companies about “disinformation.”

According to his LinkedIn page, Chan has been at the FBI since 2005, mainly focusing on cyber-related work. From September 2014 to December 2020, he served as a supervisory special agent, during which he claims to have implemented “the FBI's strategy to safeguard the U.S. elections through cyber threat intelligence briefings and information sharing.”

After Biden won the presidential election, in part due to Big Tech’s censorship of the laptop story, Chan was apparently promoted to assistant special agent in charge, overseeing the San Francisco “field office's Cyber Program.”
