From the minds that brought the world the promise of greater connectivity in a disconnected world that has ultimately led us to where we are today—a “smart” device-hyped, phone-obsessed, online-centric society of instant gratification via rapid information—we are about to enter the next phase.
The first phase consisted of social media companies and browsers with their ability to censor and manipulate content, displaying bias through their algorithms and gatekeeping what information is viewed. Google has been among the worst in this regard, which MRC Free Speech America has exposed time and time again. And it’s ongoing, too, with MRC researchers showing most recently how Google Search prioritizes the left’s agenda even in searches on legislation and also in its artificial intelligence chatbot results in queries about leftist media.
But this new phase in connectivity? It’s not just artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots that can be used as a tool to help launch individuals and the world toward greater efficiency and understanding. It’s not even just another galvanizing distraction for the masses, bringing with it glossy new concepts and thrilling new applications.
No. This next phase is far more frightening in both its alleged promise and vision—pun intended.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg detailed this next step in a recent podcast with host Theo Von:
“They’re AI glasses. So, you can— Glasses, I think, are like the perfect form factor for a device where if you want to have an AI that you let see what you see, hear what you hear—it can talk to you; you can talk to it throughout the day. … if you want to have something that has the same context of the world that you do, that’s, it’s going to be glasses, and there’s like, there’s like a billion or two billion people in the world who wear glasses already.”
Zuckerberg expressed that like the flip phone, the smartphone was always going to be the natural end result, and that the same can be said about integration of AI into wearable technology like glasses.
Masking his true aim by cloaking it in “fun,” he then got down to the terrifying bottom line: “We're trying to solve full general intelligence and super intelligence and all that, but I think in order to build a product that people are going to want to use, you're going to want to build something that's fun to use.” He added, “That means, like, you're not just going to want to like type to it, you want to like have a conversation, right? And it's not just about having it be like only able to answer hard questions, it should like get to know you; and like what you think is funny; and like what you ate, right? So that way you know it can like or you know what your hobbies are, so that way it can kind of relate to you.”
Zuckerberg wants Meta’s AI to “know you.” But how?
Zuckerberg explained this too. “A neural interface,” Zuckerberg explained, when Von was discussing how “a thing on [his] wrist” enabled him to interact with augmented reality. “You can basically control the glasses with your mind through signals that you’re sending from your brain to your hand.”
Sounds incredible, right?
But if Big Tech (media) companies like Google can already sway elections by keeping the American people in the dark with what Dr. Richard Epstein calls “ephemeral experiences,” including the order of search results, suggested search terms, get-out-the-vote reminders or other platform-driven suggestions — and they can — then imagine what an AI-integrated wearable device that can “see what you see, hear what you hear” and otherwise “know you” can do with that information.
Utilizing technology to help with productivity, to maximize efficiency, to learn new and creative ways of solving problems is important. But not forgetting the lessons of the past as the world marches toward an ever-increasing techno landscape is an imperative.
Remember what Big Tech has done before, and how the cabal did it, and don’t underestimate how the left might scheme to use the burgeoning technologies of the future against conservatives again. Vigilance is key, and the MRC is maintaining a watchful eye.
