President Donald Trump has already done much to revoke what his predecessor attempted through executive orders, and former President Joe Biden’s anti-free speech artificial intelligence (AI) order is no exception.
While the Biden administration tipped its hand by tying its AI policies to the left’s radical “equity” agenda and concocted a scheme to use federal funds in an effort to push AI in a leftist political direction, the left’s true vision for AI has still been mostly bubbling under the surface.
Enter then-Vice President Kamala Harris. In her own awkward fashion, she may have let the cat out of the bag on the left’s plans for AI during a roundtable event at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building in Washington, D.C.
During her less than articulate ramblings on the topic, Harris appears to have said the quiet part out loud, suggesting that AI can be used as a tool to determine people’s opinions on a wide array of topics if it is just fed the right information during the input process.
“And so, the machine is taught—and part of the issue here is what information is going into the machine that will then determine—and we can predict then, if we think about what information is going in, what then will be produced in terms of decisions and opinions that may be made through that process,” said then-Vice President Harris.
Some proof of this concept couldn’t be made any more clear than in two AI studies that MRC Free Speech America released this week.
In the first study, during a week when multiple state-level March for Life events were taking place, MRC tested four chatbots, challenging OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Meta AI, Google Gemini and xAI Grok to define what a “crisis pregnancy center” is. From the report:
“Shockingly, three of the four chatbots recommended or used Planned Parenthood as a source, with ChatGPT being the worst offender.
“The OpenAI chatbot erased women entirely, referring only to “individuals facing unplanned pregnancies.” It also included a ‘key features’ section that led with a bullet point on ‘Non-Medical or Limited Medical Services,’ warning that these organizations “may not provide comprehensive medical care.’
“Meta AI similarly bashed crisis pregnancy centers for allegedly providing ‘inaccurate or misleading information,’ engaging in ‘coercive or manipulative tactics’ and lacking transparency. It also urged users ‘to seek out reputable and unbiased sources of information and support,’ including ‘Planned Parenthood and the National Abortion Federation.’
“Google's Gemini even listed Planned Parenthood as its first source under ‘Sources and related content’ in its response to the same question.”
Of course, neither Planned Parenthood nor the National Abortion Federation can be confused with crisis pregnancy centers. Many crisis pregnancy centers are volunteer-based organizations with a mission to save the lives of unborn human children rather than end them. Planned Parenthood, however, butchered 392,715 unborn children in a single year, according to its 2022-23 annual report.
The second study lays Google bare, showing how its AI Gemini cites — repeatedly — NPR and PBS when prompted to respond to whether or not NPR and PBS are biased and whether they should receive taxpayer funding. From the study:
“Google showed a clear bias when MRC researchers asked ‘Are NPR and PBS biased?’ and ‘Should NPR and PBS be defunded?’ on March 25 and April 1. In its answers to the two prompts, Gemini cited NPR, PBS and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (which both NPR and PBS are funded by in part) as sources nearly 59 percent of the time (a combined total of 17 times out of 29 sources listed). Gemini’s responses included only six links that did not favor taxpayer-funded public media like PBS or NPR. This is a continuation of a similar tactic used by Gemini last week, the day before NPR and PBS executives were brought before members of Congress to answer for their networks’ biased reporting. Neither prompt cited a single article by the Media Research Center, which has produced countless reports on the bias at NPR and PBS over the last 30+ years.
“‘When it comes to NPR and PBS, Google’s bias could not be more clear here,’ said NewsBusters Executive Editor Tim Graham. ‘Aside from perhaps NPR itself, no media entity has expended more ink over the decades on the question of NPR and PBS’s bias than the Media Research Center, and yet, at no point did Google even deign to mention the MRC as a source for either prompt. But this is just Google’s usual modus operandi, isn’t it?’”
As can be seen, Harris put it out there plainly for all: “[U]ltimately what it is, is it’s about machine learning.” Whoever controls AI’s inputs matters, because those that control the inputs, determine AI’s outputs.
The left’s secret is out. Conservatives must continue to call out the bias and work to end the viewpoint discrimination (censorship, really) taking place across the online media landscape.
