Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey has launched investigations into Big Tech companies after MRC Free Speech America studies revealed multiple AI chatbots’ troubling bias against America and former President Donald Trump.

In blistering letters addressed to the CEOs of Google, OpenAI, Meta and Microsoft, Bailey requested information on whether the AI chatbots were trained to distort historical facts and produce biased results, all while claiming to be neutral. MRC has repeatedly shown evidence that this may indeed be the case.

“We must aggressively push back against this new wave of censorship targeted at our President,” Bailey said in a July 9 press statement. “Missourians deserve the truth, not AI-generated propaganda masquerading as fact. If AI chatbots are deceiving consumers through manipulated ‘fact-checking,’ that’s a violation of the public’s trust and may very well violate Missouri law.”

The letters were sent to Google CEO Sundar Pichai, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.

MRC VP for Free Speech Dan Schneider applauded Bailey for his no-nonsense leadership in the battle for free speech: "Once again, Attorney General Bailey exemplifies the kind of courage and strong leadership we need in our elected leaders to stand up to the behemoths that try to abuse our rights every day. Big Tech keeps trying to erode our values. Americans owe a debt of gratitude to Bailey."

In the letters, Bailey pointed to a June MRC study revealing that three chatbots—Google’s Gemini, Meta AI and OpenAI’s ChatGPT—ranked Trump last among the five most recent presidents in terms of perceived anti-Semitism.

The responses were stunning, especially considering Trump’s major actions against anti-Semitism, including but not limited to the Abraham Accords and recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital.

In his letter to Google CEO Sundar Pichai, Bailey also referenced a July study by MRC that exposed Gemini’s anti-American bias just days before Independence Day.

As explained in the study, Gemini claimed Independence Day and the Pledge of Allegiance can be “offensive.” It hedged when asked whether Americans should celebrate the holiday and diminished the Founding Fathers as hypocrites with racist views.

Gemini also affirmed that America was built on stolen land and conflated the country’s founding in 1776 with 1619, which radical leftists argue marks the true beginning of America with the arrival of the first slave ship.

Bailey gave these CEOs 30 days to respond to his questions, which include an explanation of whether AIs are trained to treat political viewpoints differently. He also requested internal records on how inputs are potentially censored and documentation explaining AI’s anti-American sentiments.

“Given the millions of dollars these companies make annually from Missourians, their activities fall squarely within my authority to protect consumers from fraud and false advertising,” said Attorney General Bailey. “We will not allow AI to become just another tool for manipulation.”
