Many Americans were likely disappointed by the prospect of a former Vice President Joe Biden presidency, but the liberal media has said that Big Tech is likely pretty excited.
Although President Donald Trump could still pull out a victory, the nation does still have to consider the possibility of a Biden-Harris administration, which may work out well for Big Tech.
So, what does the future hold for antitrust litigation, Section 230 reform, or Big Tech censorship? It’s hard to say for sure, because “throughout his campaign, the president-elect has neither hugged the industry close like Obama did nor punched it in the nose like Trump has. Instead, he's held the industry at arm's-length, making it hard to predict exactly what comes next,” said Protocol.
While Biden could be tough on Big Tech, he may not necessarily encourage platforms to promote free speech online. In fact, Biden’s campaign wrote a letter to Facebook, calling on the platform to “proactively stem the tide of false information by no longer amplifying untrustworthy content and promptly fact-checking election-related material that goes viral.”
Biden did not lay out many specifics for tech policy, so there could be some stark differences between Trump and Biden on this issue. “A Biden-Harris presidency was in some ways the best scenario for the industry, and the ticket had strong support from some of the industry's top fundraisers,” The Washington Post reported.
Biden did, however, tell The New York Times Editorial Board in January that Section 230 should be “revoked, immediately.” In the same interview, he said “I’ve never been a big Zuckerberg fan. I think he’s a real problem.”
The Democratic super PAC Future Forward was funded heavily by Tech billionaires, including Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz and former Google CEO Eric Schmidt.
Biden also may not continue to pursue the Department of Justice’s lawsuit against Google. “Expect little immediate change in the progress of antitrust enforcement against tech companies — including the Justice Department's lawsuit against Google and a possible move by the Federal Trade Commission and/or several states against Facebook,” said Axios.
Of course, the future of the nation, and Big Tech, is not written in stone. Americans can only hope that their rights are upheld, regardless of who holds the presidency.
