A day after a bombshell investigation implicated a far-left so-called civil rights icon in sex crime allegations, MSN and Yahoo News chose to promote ridiculous celebrity stories instead.
The Media Research Center found Thursday that The New York Times’s investigation into alleged sex crimes by United Farm Workers (UFW) co-founder César Chávez did not appear in the top 20 on Microsoft’s MSN or Yahoo News. The Times’s harrowing story was published on Wednesday.
Instead, these digital news gatekeepers chose to promote silly clickbait, such as this BuzzFeed headline on Yahoo News: “I Tried The Viral 'Frambled Eggs', And They're My New Favourite Lunch.”
Yahoo News also featured the following headlines from Parade Pets: “English Bulldog Gets Annual Performance Review -Results Leave Him Gobsmacked" and “8 Dog Breeds With the Sweetest Personalities, Say Trainers.”
MSN had a whole series of nonsense, from an Elle.com piece about Taylor Swift attending Beyoncé’s Oscars party to complaints from KPop Demon Hunters Oscar winners on Entertainment Weekly to Newsweek claiming people who live in the southwestern U.S. desert shouldn’t drink coffee in hot weather. Microsoft’s MSN even put this E! News headline at number seven: “Jay-Z Reveals Name Change With Personal Meaning.” Really, MSN?
None of those stories were as significant as The New York Times publishing shocking allegations against Chávez, as Ana Murguia and Debra Rojas have come forward to accuse the late labor leader of repeatedly sexually assaulting them when they were underage.
The alleged assaults reportedly began at age 13 for Murguia, who later said she attempted suicide. Rojas, who was 12 years old at the time, also stated that Chávez raped her, according to The Times. Chávez was over 40 years old when he allegedly carried out these assaults.
Even Chávez’s close ally, Dolores Huerta, accused him of assaulting her and stated that he impregnated her twice as a result of the abuse.
The evidence the outlet uncovered is so disturbing that even UFW canceled its annual celebration for Chávez this year. Multiple cities, including Austin, Texas, and Tucson, Arizona, followed suit with similar cancellations, according to Newsweek.
Democrats have long held Chávez up as a hero. On March 29, 2024, for instance, on “César Chávez Day”, then-President Joe Biden issued a proclamation urging Americans to “recommit to fulfilling the fundamental vision of La Causa” and lauded Chávez as “defin[ing] extraordinary moral courage” through his “unyielding faith and an immovable spirit.” Biden, who credited his political career to Chávez’s UFW, had even placed a bust of Chávez in the Oval Office in 2021.
Then-President Barack Obama declared “César Chávez Day” a federal observance on March 29, 2013. Among the states that recognize “César Chávez Day” are California, Colorado, Minnesota, Texas, Utah and Washington, according to Newsweek. Multiple cities in Arizona, where Chávez was born, also mark the day. Newsweek noted that some politicians are scrambling to cancel the holiday after the allegations against Chávez.
