With the War Department’s recently announced initiative on artificial intelligence, Secretary Pete Hegseth has an unprecedented opportunity to save America from another opposition force: Google.
The federal government has little choice but to use technology developed by woke companies, since most of the major players in the technology field in America are left-leaning. Google, for example, is particularly extreme in its leftist bias. But at least the Department of War’s (DOW) decision to use Google’s new secure generative AI platform GenAI.mil gives the Trump administration powerful leverage to enforce the president’s no woke AI executive order.
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth posted on X Dec. 9 that the new technology that combines AI and search, “puts the world’s most powerful frontier AI models directly into the hands of every American warrior. We will continue to aggressively field the world’s best technology to make our fighting force more lethal than ever before. And all, American made.” GenAI.mil is part of the Trump administration’s race to beat the communist Chinese government in developing top-tier AI models.
MRC Vice President for Free Speech Dan Schneider reacted to the launch by saying, “There’s more to this than meets the eye. Yes, our national defense relies on technology created by Google and Apple and other Big Tech companies, but because our Secretary of War controls the purse strings, he’s got Google exactly where he wants them. Hegseth can simultaneously protect our national security while forcing Google into compliance with Trump’s executive order.”
The platform is launching at the same time as President Donald Trump has been rolling out a slew of executive orders on AI. Just last week, Trump enacted “one rulebook” for AI at the federal level, to regulate, encourage development of and de-wokify AI. This is the culmination of months of AI initiatives from the administration. In July, Trump signed an executive order aimed at exorcising wokeness from AI procured by the U.S. federal government.

The no woke AI executive order requires that any large language models (LLMs) used by the government must adhere to “Unbiased AI Principles,” which means obeying a standard of “truth-seeking and ideological neutrality.” This includes historical accuracy, nonpartisan responses, scientific objectivity and no Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) bias.
Google’s AI is hardly neutral, as MRC has repeatedly exposed. For instance, on Dec. 4, MRC published data showing AI-driven Google News excluded stories on the COVID-19 Somali fraud scandal of Minnesota’s Gov. Tim Walz (D) and Attorney General Keith Ellison (D).
During the week of Nov. 17, Google News excluded breaking news reporting from the New York Post about how would-be Trump assassin Thomas Crooks had ties to the neo-Nazi and furry communities. Google Search has also consistently promoted the heavily leftist-biased Wikipedia at the top of its search results for the year’s most searched query: “Charlie Kirk assassination.” In October, filmmaker and podcaster Robby Starbuck sued Google after its AI chatbots Bard, Gemini and Gemma allegedly invented detailed accusations of crimes he says he never committed. Just before July 4, Google Gemini asserted Independence Day could be offensive to some people.
This is why the Trump administration’s leverage is so important. Hegseth has the opportunity to bring Google more into line with Trump’s executive orders.
