The House Judiciary Committee subpoenaed Google’s parent company for information on its alleged collusion with the federal government to censor Americans’ free speech.
In a letter accompanying the subpoena, the Committee requested from Alphabet “communications between Alphabet and the executive branch, internal Alphabet communications discussing communications from the executive branch, and Alphabet communications with third parties that may have been working with the executive branch.”
In a statement shared with MRC, reflecting the letter’s language, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan explained why Google’s efforts in particular have been concerning. “After the Committee's oversight revealed the Biden-Harris Administration's censorship regime, companies that were pressured to censor Americans, like Meta, admitted it was wrong to bow to the Administration's demands, publicly apologized, and announced changes to support free expression online. Alphabet has not taken similar steps to the Committee's knowledge,” Jordan said.
The Chairman added, “The subpoena for Alphabet's internal documents and communications about their role in the Biden-Harris censorship efforts is critical to make lasting reforms protecting the First Amendment for all Americans.”
In the March 6 press release, the Committee declared that its “oversight has revealed that YouTube, a subsidiary of Alphabet, was a direct participant in the federal government's censorship regime.” In fact, based on documents it obtained, the Committee found “that the federal government successfully pressured YouTube to censor certain lawful content, including content that did not violate YouTube's content moderation policies.”
MRC’s unique CensorTrack database supports these accusations, showing hundreds of cases of biased YouTube censorship. For instance, in February YouTube search suppressed Catherine Herridge’s interview with Secretary of State Marco Rubio, making it difficult for users to find the video via the search function.
Furthermore, MRC has repeatedly found that Google’s search engine favors leftist news sources. For example, in the six weeks leading up to the election, the search giant consistently favored overwhelmingly leftist news sources about Donald Trump and continued to target Trump nominees into January.
