President-elect Donald Trump’s pick for artificial intelligence czar has drawn praise from free speech advocates, including Rumble CEO Chris Pavlovski, because of his outspoken criticism of Big Tech censorship.

On Dec. 5, Trump announced on Truth Social that David O. Sacks, an investor, co-host of the All-In Podcast, and PayPal’s former chief operating officer, will be the new administration’s “White House A.I. & Crypto Czar.” Sacks will help direct administration policy for AI and cryptocurrency, which Trump described as “two areas critical to the future of American competitiveness.” Trump also stated that Sacks would defend free speech and fight online censorship.

Sacks is a staunch advocate for the First Amendment, emphasizing in September that the “fight of our times is over free speech. The bad guys are always the ones trying to restrict it.” His pro-free speech stance has garnered widespread praise, with many applauding his appointment as the AI czar.

Pavlovski celebrated Sacks’s elevation as AI czar, writing on social media, “Congratulations to our Rumble board member @DavidSacks on becoming the White House A.I. & Crypto Czar.”

The Rumble CEO wasn’t the only one to celebrate Sacks’s nomination. Sequoia Capital partner Shaun Maguire declared, “It’s time to build.” Social Capital CEO Chamath Palihapitiya called Sacks a “successful entrepreneur, a principled free speech absolutist and a brilliant technologist.”

Indeed, in November, Sacks condemned Big Tech’s  censorship, singling out Google platforms as “the absolute worst.” His remarks aligned with MRC Free Speech America’s research, which exposed Google’s search manipulation during the election season.

Sacks himself has been censored, as recorded in MRC’s CensorTrack database. In June 2023, X Community Notes imposed a fact-check on his post criticizing the deployment of American troops in Ukraine. Similarly, in March, X fact-checked another post in which Sacks criticized the existence and possible expansion of NATO.

In his announcement, Trump declared that Sacks “will focus on making America the clear global leader in both areas. He will safeguard Free Speech online, and steer us away from Big Tech bias and censorship.” This marks a potentially major departure from the Biden administration, which has fueled the censorship industrial complex, as alleged in the Murthy v. Missouri lawsuit and The Twitter Files.

The president-elect said Sacks “will work on a legal framework so the Crypto industry has the clarity it has been asking for, and can thrive in the U.S. David will also lead the Presidential Council of Advisors for Science and Technology.”

He concluded, “David [Sacks] has the knowledge, business experience, intelligence, and pragmatism to MAKE AMERICA GREAT in these two critical technologies. Congratulations, David!”

Sacks will be the AI czar under Trump, which was the title Biden’s Vice President Kamala Harris held under the outgoing administration. Harris called for AI censorship in 2023, asserting that people cannot “discern fact from fiction.” In stark contrast, Sacks’ pro-free speech stance signals a significant shift in policy direction from that of the BIden-Harris administration.
