The Biden administration is reportedly trying to prevent an injunction that would put a pause on its alleged efforts to work with Big Tech companies to censor online speech.

Reclaim The Net reported on Friday that lawyers for the Biden administration urged the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit to reject an injunction request to prevent government pressure on Big Tech to censor Americans’ free speech.

This highlighted the entrenched nature of the federal government’s and Big Tech’s anti-free speech activities, especially as they seek to increase their election interference efforts in the upcoming months. The proposed injunction is part of a lawsuit by the New Civil Liberties Alliance (NCLA) surrounding government-Big Tech COVID-19 censorship on Twitter, revealed through The Twitter Files.

The NCLA is representing attorney and author Michael P. Senger, cognitive scientist Mark Changizi, and freedom activist Daniel Kotzin in the lawsuit, according to Reclaim The Net. The three men were suspended, censored, and/or banned from Twitter for alleged COVID-19 “misinformation.”

The lawsuit accused the Biden administration of plotting a “coordinated and escalating campaign” to censor free speech on Twitter, Reclaim The Net reported. Indeed, a February 2022 MRC Free Speech America study found over 800 cases of Big Tech censoring the COVID-19 debate, with a significant number of the cases being Twitter.

The NCLA singled out Surgeon General Vivek Murthy and Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra for various anti-free speech activities that ultimately pressured Twitter into censoring COVID-19 content and users.

The Twitter Files revealed that Twitter even censored true COVID-19 content after government pressure, treating users as if they couldn’t be trusted to know the truth. Yet the Biden administration lawyers reportedly argued that Twitter censored users “independent of the government.”

The March 2022 lawsuit was originally dismissed by a lower court but now is being heard by the Sixth Circuit Court, reported Reclaim The Net. The NCLA aimed for “an injunction that would stop the federal government from pressuring tech platforms to censor content,” the outlet added. That is the injunction which the anti-free speech Biden administration reportedly argues should be rejected.
