Twitter Vice President of Trust and Safety Del Harvey has announced she is leaving the company. Harvey has been praised for making Twitter safe, but in fact she left a legacy of biased censorship.
Del Harvey announced via tweet thread that she was leaving Twitter after 13 years on Tuesday. Harvey tweeted that she made the “difficult decision” so she can “focus my time and attention on my family.” Harvey “helped oversee the company's efforts to safeguard elections and deal with other problematic content on the platform,” Protocol wrote.
Other Twitter and Big Tech executives reportedly praised Harvey, including Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey, who said, “Thank you Del!” and Facebook head of security Nathaniel Gleicher, who thanked Harvey for her “incredible work.” Harvey actually oversaw increasing biased censorship during her time at Twitter, however. The battle line with Big Tech comes down to “safety” vs. “freedom,” as MRC Free Speech America has previously noted.
Twitter earned a big “F” in online freedom, free speech, and bias for both quarter one and quarter two of MRC Free Speech America’s Big Tech Report Cards this year. Twitter suspended then-sitting President of the United States Donald Trump permanently after the events on Jan. 6 at the U.S. Capitol. Twitter also permanently banned Project Veritas founder James O’Keefe and suspended multiple accounts which were merely tweeting out Trump’s statements.
Twitter bragged in its July 2021 transparency report about its censorship, claiming the platform “challenged” nearly 12 million accounts, “suspended 1,496 accounts, and removed over 43,010 pieces of content” related to COVID-19 “misinformation” alone since last year. Twitter introduced its new censorship program, Birdwatch, in January 2021. Yet Twitter hypocritically allowed content such as “#KillTrump,” calls to kill police and seemingly threatening tweets from Iran’s Ayatollah Khamenei, one of which is still on the platform as of the publishing of this piece.
Twitter reportedly banned at least eight election audit accounts in July 2021. Twitter reportedly announced a stricter censorship policy of alleged mail-in voting “misinformation” weeks before the 2020 election. TPUSA founder Charlie Kirk was censored for allegedly violating the platform’s policy by tweeting reports of mail-in ballot voter fraud in Pennsylvania. Feminist Meghan Murphy was banned from Twitter in 2018 for insisting that the distinction between men and women is a biological fact.
Del Harvey’s legacy as Twitter VP of Trust and Safety included less of safeguarding elections and users and more of a sharp rise in biased censorship of users who challenge leftist narratives.
