MRC Free Speech America has proof to illustrate what a massive and ongoing problem Big Tech censorship is—a fact Twitter Files Journalist Michael Shellenberger underscored Sunday on X.
Shellenberger blasted The Independent for referencing Full Fact—a British non-profit fact-checking organization—to claim that "Trump's anti-censorship drive is fueling misinformation in the UK." He shared a screenshot of the paper covering Full Fact’s 2025 report, which dubiously claimed Trump’s free speech push poses a threat to foreign countries.
“The beginning of President Trump’s second term has continued to have a chaotic impact on the information environment, and the dust is unlikely to settle soon,” Full Fact declared in the report, as quoted by The Independent. Shellenberger swifly slammed this statement as "nonsense," emphasizing that "the danger lies in censorship, not in free speech."
He is dead on—and MRC’s unique CensorTrack database has the evidence to back it up.
As of Friday, MRC has logged a staggering 8,151 cases of censorship in CensorTrack, a truly unique record of censorship across multiple platforms over multiple years.
MRC highlights Big Tech’s worst censorship each month, based on cases logged in its database. In April, for instance, Facebook disabled the account of West Virginia political candidate Courtney Knill without a clear reason, while Chinese government-tied TikTok targeted proud wives’ posts praising their husbands. Facebook’s censorship calls into question Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s promises to be more pro-free speech.
In January, MRC revealed how Wikipedia effectively blacklists right-leaning media. Furthermore, MRC also found that Google Search results were heavily biased against Trump administration nominees, including FCC Commissioner Brendan Carr and now-FBI Director Kash Patel.
Election-interfering censorship was particularly egregious ahead of the 2024 presidential election. The primary target was President Donald Trump, as Google Search predominantly presented leftist sources about him, while both Google and X restricted Trump’s campaign accounts.
Meta’s Instagram and Facebook put interstitials over photos of Trump’s assassination attempt, while Amazon’s Alexa and Google’s Gemini censored information on the same attempt. These are only a few examples of Big Tech’s election interference in 2024, all recorded in CensorTrack.
