Despite contentious legal battles, Twitter’s shareholders approved Elon Musk’s deal to purchase the platform for $44 billion.

The Verge reported Tuesday that the company confirmed it has enough votes to approve the purchase. Musk, however, shows no signs of backing down amid a protracted legal battle with Twitter.

NewsBusters reported in August that the Tesla CEO said the deal will go through if Twitter provides proof that its reported numbers of “real” accounts on the platform are accurate.

“If Twitter simply provides their method of sampling 100 accounts and how they’re confirmed to be real, the deal should proceed on original terms," Musk tweeted. "However, if it turns out that their SEC filings are materially false, then it should not.”

Later that month, Musk’s legal team sent the company a second letter claiming that Twitter’s reported falsehoods give him sufficient grounds to cancel the deal.

“Allegations regarding certain facts, known to Twitter prior to and as of July 8, 2022, but undisclosed to the Musk Parties prior to and at that time, have since come to light that provide additional and distinct bases to terminate the Merger Agreement. Although the Musk Parties believe this termination notice is not legally necessary to terminate the Merger Agreement because they have already validly terminated it pursuant to the July 8 Termination Notice, the Musk Parties are delivering this additional termination notice in the event that the July 8 Termination Notice is determined to be invalid for any reason.”

Twitter has been in the news for another reason this week, as claims from whistleblower and former Twitter Head of Security Peiter Zatko about the company’s privacy practices gained traction.

NewsBusters reported Tuesday that Twitter kept “Chinese Communist Party-linked advertising accounts” on the platform.

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) said during a hearing of the Senate Judiciary Committee Tuesday that user data was potentially exposed to three different agents affiliated with two foreign countries.

“Because of [the whistleblower’s] disclosures, we've learned that personal data from Twitter users was potentially exposed to foreign intelligence agencies,” Grassley said, adding that the FBI specifically warned Twitter about an agent tied to the Communist Party of China.
