President Biden took aim at Big Tech in his latest executive order on Friday. Or at least that's what they said.
The sweeping executive order says it cracks down on Big Tech’s anti-competitive practices. The order includes 72 actions and recommendations aimed at promoting competition in the U.S. economy after the global pandemic. The Friday afternoon drop of such a sweeping order raises questions about the details.
The White House aims to "reduce the trend of corporate consolidation, increase competition, and deliver concrete benefits to America’s consumers, workers, farmers, and small businesses.”
"For decades, corporate consolidation has been accelerating," a fact sheet released by the White House reads, stating that the order is "a whole-of-government effort to promote competition in the American economy."
The order calls on the Federal Trade Commission to reestablish “net neutrality,” reversing a Trump decision that eliminated the laws.
The White House also asked the FTC to establish rules on surveillance and the accumulation of data by Big Tech companies like Facebook, Twitter, and Google.
"Capitalism without competition isn't capitalism. It's exploitation," Biden said.
The news comes after Trump himself filed a lawsuit against Facebook, Twitter, and Google earlier in the week.
Trump said he filed the lawsuit to protect the First Amendment rights of all Americans.
“Through this lawsuit, we are standing up for American democracy by standing up for free speech rights of every American, Democrat, Republican, independent, whoever it may be,” he said.
