Mark Levin Shreds Rep. Jamie Raskin on the Debt Ceiling Conservative radio host Mark Levin recently took far-left Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) to the woodshed for outrageous comments he made about the debt ceiling and how President Joe Biden could circumvent it.

Raskin, while on the May 24 edition of MSNBC’s Morning Joe, ludicrously called for President Joe Biden to use the 14th Amendment to ignore the debt ceiling by executive action, claiming that it is a requirement for the president.

In a scathing response to this ridiculous statement, Levin lambasted Raskin on the May 24 edition of his radio show, that the notion was downright ludicrous and wasn’t congruent at all with what the Constitution really stipulated, saying that “the 14th Amendment provides no cover, any more than the 13th, or the 15th, or any other Amendment to the Constitution.”

Levin’s comments preceded Biden and House Speaker Kevin McCarthy reportedly reaching a tentative deal “in principle” to raise the debt ceiling with some spending cuts.

Levin heavily criticized the left, including “Democrats and the media,” for dishonestly interpreting the Constitution in ways which the founders did not intend. He asked his listeners if they thought that “those who adopted the 14th Amendment … would have agreed to give the president to not only submit a budget but to fund the budget,” an idea Levin rightly calls “asinine.” He also said that the 14th Amendment “has absolutely nothing to do with today’s budget, with today’s debt, with today’s spending.”

To Raskin’s crazy assertion on MSNBC that “the 14th Amendment is not an option… [it] is an imperative,” Levin said that “the Constitution was not amended to eviscerate the House of Representatives.” He rightly called Raskin’s idea a “fantasy.”

Raskin also claimed that section IV of the 14th Amendment’s clause about questioning the “validity of the public debt” applies to the current debt ceiling debacle in Congress. Levin called out the falsity of this statement as well, saying that “it doesn’t say in there anywhere … that if Congress doesn’t agree to raise a debt limit, the president has the unilateral power to issue loan instruments….”

Levin then turned to Raskin’s comment that he “[doesn’t] think there will be legal challenges by the administration, because the president doesn't have to challenge anybody." Levin pointed out the obvious flaw: “the president would be a defendant; he wouldn’t bring a case.”

Later in his MSNBC interview, Raskin also tried to attack the idea members of Congress could sue the president for using a constitutionally dubious legal theory to circumvent standing law on the debt ceiling. Raskin absurdly stated that congressional members “would have to prove that they have standing [in court], which means that they're injured by other people getting paid the money that the United States of America owes them.” In his retort, Levin drives home the point that “the House of Representatives would have standing, because it has a cause of action;” that is, the separation of powers.

Levin further said that, according to Raskin’s ideas, “not only can Biden do this [invoke the 14th Amendment], but nobody can challenge him. So Biden can do this. He can rip to shreds the [14th] Amendment and Article I [of the Constitution]! And nobody can stop him!”
