The Washington Post celebrated Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s scheduled Halloween impeachment vote (ironic) as a fulfillment of an ongoing mission by liberal billionaire and 2020 Democratic Party primary candidate Tom Steyer since 2017.
The Post’s adulatory Oct. 31 piece headlined “Power Up: A liberal fantasy no longer? Tom Steyer’s Need to Impeach campaign comes full circle with House vote,” fawned over Steyer’s efforts like a fulfillment of prophecy. “[W]hat was once derided as Steyer’s liberal fantasy is coming true,” The Post stated, “House Democrats will cast their first vote today on an impeachment inquiry into President Trump.”
Liberal fantasy? More like a $120 million media-bolstered obsession.
The Post continued, drooling, “[T]oday's vote is an affirmation of [Steyer’s] political instincts,” even referring to the impeachment vote as Steyer’s “‘I told you so’ moment.”
The Post further touted Steyer’s sentiments that the “impeachment milestone validate[d] his credentials as an outsider willing to eschew Washington's consultant class and take on party leadership.”
What The Post failed to point out was that Steyer had been just as much an “insider” as any of his fellow liberal billionaires with political pull in Washington D.C.

On July 9, 2019, Steyer reportedly resigned from the board of directors for the liberal think tank Center for American Progress, a position he held for at least nine years. His Tomkat Charitable Trust and George Soros’ Open Society Foundations have been listed as major donors. Steyer is also one of the left’s largest political donors. He spent a combined $239 million exclusively on liberals and Democrats over the past three election cycles. He was also the top individual contributor in both the 2014 and 2016 elections.
Having spent $47 million in the first 84 days since his candidacy on his own presidential bid, The Post noted Steyer’s promise to also spend $50 million to support both Need to Impeach and NextGen America organizations to ensure they “fulfill their missions.”
To date, Steyer is the top contributor to outside spending groups for 2019-2020, according to data from Open Secrets. He has already contributed $21,063,557 to liberals, outspending the top eight conservative donors during the same period.
Open Secrets ranked Steyer as the third-highest federal contributor for 2018, having given nearly $74 million exclusively to liberal candidates, PACs and causes.
The Post rounded out its laudatory piece by citing Steyer’s thoughts on liberals’ efforts to impeach Trump: “This process is the restoration of democracy.”
But The Post was not alone in drooling over the liberal billionaire’s impeachment agenda. MSNBC’s Chris Matthews seemed to get yet another “thrill” up his leg on Oct. 29, when he praised Steyer for having “‘spotted the cancer’ in this country that’s been ‘the Trump presidency.’” Matthews also awkwardly referred to Steyer as “a John Brown to this whole thing,” a reference that harkens back to the famous abolitionist who led an Oct.1859 raid on Harpers Ferry, West Virginia and was later hanged.
Help fight back against the media's impeachment crusade.
