Twitter censors James Renner: Twitter locked the account of true crime author James Renner, one day after it up updated its policies. According to an article on Mashable, many of Renner’s tweets contained articles he had written about Maura Murray, a woman who had gone missing 18 years ago. Another of the reported tweets discussed Murray’s then boyfriend, Bill Rausch. Mashable says, “In recent years, Rausch has been charged on felony sexual abuse of a subordinate. The ongoing case has received local news coverage. The victim actually went to the police to report the alleged assault after discovering Rausch's connection to Maura Murray through online reporting, such as Renner’s.” Renner appealed to Twitter because of the journalistic aspects of his work. According to screenshots, Twitter responded Renner’s to appeals by claiming he was “violating our rules against posting private media of an individual from a country with a recognized right to privacy law.” Twitter did not specify what particular content violated their policy. The policy updates, still in effect at the time of writing, prohibit sharing “private media, such as images or videos of private individuals, without their consent.” However, “Users may share images or videos of private individuals, who are not public figures, as part of a newsworthy event or to further public discourse on issues or events of public interest. In such cases, we may allow the media to remain on the platform.” Despite this carve-out for journalism, Twitter denied Renner’s appeals. Mashable reports that the following day, “Renner once again had access to his account but only after deleting four of the tweets that had been reported.”
