Freedom In America

Facebook slaps irrelevant fact check on Juneteenth post: Freedom in America, a small conservative Facebook page, posted a graphic about Juneteenth. The graphic read "Juneteenth[,] June 19th, 1865[,] The day Republicans and the Union army freed the remaining slaves... ...from Democrat slave owners." Facebook fact-checker, Associated Press, claimed that the graphic was false because the NRA was not "formed to defend African Americans against the KKK."  The fact check begins saying it will debunk the claim made in the graphic and the claim that shortly after the Civil War "the NRA was formed to help Black people defend themselves against the Democrats’ Ku Klux Klan." AP argues that the Civil War was a Union v. Confederacy issue not a Republican v. Democrat issue and therefore the graphic is false. The fact-checker fails to even acknowledge that the war largely (although not exclusively) divided along party platforms and interests. Freedom in America has received several fact checks and restrictions from Facebook over the last year and is now "at risk of being unpublished," has "reduced distribution" and is no longer being suggested to Facebook users who might like the page.
