X community adds a context note to an Elon Musk post: X (formerly Twitter) owner Elon Musk posted "True. I always wondered why NATO continued to exist even though its nemesis and reason to exist, The Warsaw Pact, had dissolved." This was in response to another user who posted "In 1991 the Soviet Union fell apart and NATO faced an existential crisis: its reason for being no longer existed. But rather than disband, it came up with a new mission: to expand. And in a self-referential loop, NATO expansion would create the hostility needed to justify itself." The X community added a note to the post that read: "Readers added context they thought people might want to know. The reason for NATOs existence is explained in its preamble: "to safeguard the freedom, common heritage and civilisation of their peoples, founded on the principles of democracy, individual liberty and the rule of law." nato.int/cps/en/natoliv… The Warsaw Pact was established 6 years after NATO. nato.int/cps/en/natohq/…" The label is part of X’s Community Notes system. X users are able to sign up as contributors to add context to posts. X owner Elon Musk shared that any post with a Community Note added to it will be demonetized. The Community Notes account on X also posted that notices will be pushed to users who previously engaged with a post when a Community Note is added to it later.
