The Continent/Simon Allison

Editor of The Continent suspended from Twitter following his tweet about The Continent's own suspension from Twitter: Simon Allison is the Africa editor for The Continent, a weekly newspaper that showcases reporting from journalists across Africa. He was suspended from his twitter account after authoring a tweet about The Continent's own suspension. "Twitter has suspended our access to the @thecontinent_ account. It says we violated its policy on spreading misinformation about Covid," read Allison's tweet which included images of the publication's offending tweet. The Continent was reportedly suspended for violating Twitter's rules about sharing misinformation about COVID-19 after it tweeted out a teaser for their upcoming vaccine coverage. "Vax the pax: We explain what vaccine nationalism is, why Bill Gates won't support calls to remove patents from Covid vaccines, and look into how Johnson & Johnson and Novavax have the potential to work against the infamous South African variant," read The Continent's violating tweet. Allison simply tweeted about the circumstances of the publication's account being suspended, and subsequently he was also suspended. "More likely than not, the decision to suspend @thecontinent_ was made by an algorithm," Allison tweeted. "But if the algorithm is silencing independent journalism, it’s not working." Upon appeal Twitter restored Allison's account and it appears that The Continent's Twitter account has also been restored.
