Consumers’ Research

YouTube age restricted a video accusing cryptocurrency of shady behavior: Consumers’ Research posted a video ad accusing the cruptocurrency company "Teather" of being associated with potentially illegal behavior. "Teather is the go-to cryptocurrency for the world's worst: the cartels that flood our streets with fentanyl, global human trafficking networks," the video warned. Consumers’ Research Executive Director Will Hild posted on X on June 26, “.@YouTube is now censoring our ad exposing @Tether_to, providing no explanation as to why...” Hild included a screenshot showing YouTube had placed a label over the video reading “Sign in to confirm your age[.] This video may be inappropriate for some users.” As of Sept. 4, YouTube still had an age restriction on the video.

YouTube's Age restrictions place significant limitations on videos that they are attatched to. Documentarian and CEO of Good Kid Productions Rob Montz explained this in an op-ed for The Daily Wire after YouTube age-restricted one of his videos in December of 2022. “In practice, age restriction is a death knell: The video can’t be embedded on external websites; viewers have to sign in before they can watch it; and it receives scant – if any – boost from YouTube’s recommendation algorithm, which is a crucial source of views,” Montz said.
