Facebook slaps a fact-check on user's post of a meme of alleged Marcus Cicero quote: A user posted a meme of a quote allegedly made by Roman statesman and philosopher Marcus Cicero. The meme stated: "Cicero of the Roman empire said this: 1. The poor - work & work. 2. The rich - exploit the poor. 3. The soldier - protects both. 4. The taxpayer - pays for all three. 5. The banker - robs all four. 6. The lawyer - misleads all five. 7. The doctor - bills all six. 8. The goons - scare all of seven. 9. The Politician -, lives happily on account of all eight. Written in 43 B.C., but valid even today ... !!!" Facebook slapped the user's post with a "False information" interstitial claiming that "Independent fact checkers say this information has no basis in fact." The fact-check linked out to an article by the Australian-based AAP FactCheck , which claimed that there was "no evidence that Cicero is the source of the observations included in the meme. Two academics told AAP FactCheck the purported quotes were not contained in his writings, nor were they consistent with his known views." AAP FactCheck is a member of the George Soros-funded International Fact-Checking Network, a project by the liberal Poynter Institute. The IFCN received $1 million in 2020 from Facebook. The platform announced a partnership with independent third-party fact-checkers that were members of IFCN, as well as IFCN itself. According to Facebook, users fail to click through fact-check interstitials 95% of the time.

The user whose post was censored slammed Facebook's censorship in a follow up post of another meme with an alleged quote by Roman historian Tacitus: "The more corrupt the state, the more numerous the laws." The user captioned the post: "Fact check this you Facebook Gestapos."
