Twitter restricts a user’s tweet: According to a screenshot a user posted of his account, Twitter censored one of his tweets. In the prior tweet, the user said, “Not afraid of China. It’s a failing system. Chinese people will eventually revolt against their leaders. People want freedom. In China, men & women lack basic human freedoms. The government controls everyone’s lives & media. Minorities such as the Uyghurs are treated terribly.” Twitter restricted the tweet. Per the screenshot, Twitter explains, “We have determined your Tweet violated our rules against Hateful Conduct. You may not promote violence against, threaten, or harass other people on the basis of race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, religious affiliation, age, disability, or serious disease.” Twitter’s Hateful Conduct policy further describes prohibited behaviors. These include “inciting others to harass members of a protected category” or “targeting others with repeated slurs.” However, the user’s censored tweet contained no such content and was actually protesting the oppression which many Chinese people suffer.
